A Jamaican-born woman who came to England aged nine has realized her dream of opening a hair salon in Derby. The 28-year-old specializes in cuts for men and women with Afro hair, using techniques like braiding, box braiding and weaving, which she started learning at a young age. Monique said: "Growing up in Jamaica, I had an interest in hair and I was always surrounded by people who braided hair because I loved watching them do their clients' hair. "Over the years I worked as a hairstylist mobile and also at home, until a few years ago when I had the opportunity to work in one of the few black-owned hair salons in the area. “As an up-and-coming hairdresser I always dreamed of opening my own salon, especially because I noticed that the majority of salons in Derby did not cater to afro hair. “I wanted to own a salon that could cater to all hair types, but especially afro hair, because all women deserve to have that salon experience and feel beautiful," Monique added.
