Celtics' Parquet To Be Lifted

The Boston Celtics said Monday they will be replacing the hardwood floor they've used for 53 years with a new, high-tech floor that will look and contain remnants of the old one. "We want people to walk into the FleetCenter and know they're still seeing the Celtics," said Randy Randjelovic, technical director of Connor Sports Flooring Corporation, which manufactures the new flooring. The Celtics will retire the old floor on Dec. 22, giving it a ceremony usually reserved for big retirees and championship banner raisings. Indiana Pacers coach and former Celtics star Larry Bird, who played half his Hall of Fame career on the old floor, said ahead of Monday night's game against the Celtics that he was not not sentimental about the surface. The old floor, which cost $11,000, was a distinctive feature of the Boston Garden, where the Celtics played until they moved to the FleetCenter in 1996. Some thought the uneven floor surface and dead spots gave an advantage to the home team, and legend has it that Celtics players headed opponents into dead spots and then swept the ball away on a bad rebound. Even though the Celtics spend around $200,000 on the new floor, they will emulate those features in the new floor.
