Mission Viejo Council Approves Later Deliveries At New Floor & Decor Store, Despite Resident Protests

Karn, a 49-year-old resident, was one of the few residents at Tuesday's city council meeting as the building's proposed next tenant, Floor & Decor, appealed the planning commission's decision of the city to cease all deliveries and customer pickups at 5 p.m. on an overnight basis. Officials representing Floor & Decor initially requested that deliveries be allowed until 6 p.m. and picking up customers until 7 p.m., indicating that customers may not be able to get to the location from work before 5 p.m. City Council voted, 3-2 with Mayor Ed Sachs and Pro Tem Mayor Greg Raths opposing, to allow deliveries to continue until 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays only, while customer pickup has been extended to 6 p.m. each night. "They are looking for where to get a profit at the expense of the community and other businesses."

During discussions, Raths said that while Floor & Decor will bring sales tax revenue to the city, it will take away from other tile companies operating in Mission Viejo. The city received a total of 55 comments, verbal and written, asking the city council to keep the deadlines at 5 p.m., while some also said they did not want Floor & Decor to occupy the space. "It's not the forklift itself, it's the other noise the forklift makes picking up the pallets and dropping the pallets and the drivers opening their forklift doors and they slam and do all kinds of noises," 18-year-old resident Kevin Webb told the council.
