The end result, after several attempts (other than hard training), is that in the one section where I was trying to lift the beam, it grew about an eighth of an inch. Part of the problem is that several of the floor joists, which are 2x10s spanning the full width of the house, were cut at some point to allow access to the basement from the front bedroom on the first floor. It's no surprise that this is now the lowest part of the beam, as it supports much more weight than expected. We will replace the cut joists when we tear out the first floor subfloor, but for now we have to work with what we have. Another issue is that the jack poles I purchased ($45 a piece from Menards) are rated between 9,100 and 18,000 pounds. That seemed like a lot, but bearing in mind that we removed 9 tons during the first floor demonstration alone, it's very likely that the weight the beam carries is greater than that. Damp dirt under the column explains the rot, but it's concerning because I don't know where the moisture is coming from yet. With the column removed I can now cut off the rotten section and use it in conjunction with the 50 ton hydraulic jacks I ordered which will arrive in a few days.
