What is happening in this video… This restaurant was undergoing a complete renovation of its existing kitchen, cold rooms and freezer. Existing kitchen floor

In the kitchen there were leaking issues that needed to be fixed in the subfloor above the floor which had grease encrusted quarry tiles and the plywood floors below the tiles were eaten away from the daily abuse of hot water and grease/oil penetrating through tile grout lines. Too often, commercial flooring options unfortunately lead to commercial epoxy flooring being recommended as the appropriate solution for warm restaurant kitchen floors. But, nowadays, there is a better solution available - one that beats tile floors, laminates, hardwood floors and even epoxy flooring. Urethane Mortar Flooring System Recommendation

Garon's on-site analysis of thermal cycles during normal operation and cleaning activities, as well as repeated exposure to daily hot steam washing, resulted in the recommendation of a seamless urethane mortar system 3/8″ thick [Mortarthane™ HF] as opposed to a restaurant epoxy flooring system. . The restaurant had to replace the existing rotting engineered wood floor - plywood subfloor, with new 2″ thick marine grade exterior multi-ply plywood to ensure the floor was strong enough to accommodate the urethane mortar and prevent movement. The application of a urethane mortar [Mortarthane™ TC] top coat provided an additional improvement in traction for non-slip flooring, wear resistance and overall aesthetics. The urethane mortar flooring system provided a seamless finish to the new floor that created a bacteria-free and easy-to-clean environment; withstands hot washes and improves slip resistance to meet OSHA standards, while the overall aesthetic improves employee morale.

The reasons are twofold: 1) Newer installed vinyl or linoleum flooring is likely to be adhered to the floor using newer EPA-mandated water-based adhesives that have tends to be much easier to remove than old fashioned putty, 2) New tiles or sheets may still contain significant amounts of the plasticizer and/or oily ingredients used in their manufacture which could compromise adhesion subsequent epoxy coatings. Professional floor preparation before epoxy coatings

Although it is not recommended to install epoxy flooring over structurally unsound concrete and the application of resin flooring over wood or ceramic tile should be carefully considered, other types substrates also require professional and experienced floor preparation and installation.

Can Epoxy Floor Coatings Be Applied To Wood?

Some wooden floor coverings may be candidates for epoxy coatings, but they must be rough sanded first. If you want to refinish a wood floor with an epoxy coating, it's probably not in great shape. In practice, therefore, wood floors should not be coated with epoxy. If you are interested in coating wood floors with epoxy flooring, we recommend speaking with an installer first. Apply epoxy to wood floors

If you have wood floors that are heavily scratched, discolored, or showing age, an epoxy coating can theoretically hide the damage and create a new surface layer. Even if it's old wood flooring that hasn't been refinished in decades, it needs to be sanded down to create an exposed, rough surface for the epoxy to adhere to. Hardware stores sell epoxy flooring kits that you can install yourself, but these products won't work very well on wood floors.
