The example presented here is a group of children who have been invited to come and look at some pictures from the day before. Many different representations emerged from this discussion:

The children described the pictures orally and the educator wrote the statements The children cut out the pictures and pasted them on the page The children wrote down their theories, questions and ideas The theories were made visible by drawings Cause and effect writing while the children described the pictures The children labeled the photographs

Role of the educator - During this time, the educator listened, recorded the conversation, guided the conversation (if necessary), mediated when the children offered their opinions and viewpoints to each other, and provided instruction in writing in small groups according to the particular needs of each student. this time.

The Floorbook Approach

Updating the floor book in consultation with children is important because: it creates a closer match between the child and the curriculum they are following; it builds self-esteem and positive attitudes when the learner is involved in decision-making; it increases intrinsic motivation, which stays with a child throughout life; and children have the right to be treated with respect by valuing their thoughts and opinions. Features of a floor book include

children's ideas and thoughts;

open-ended questions - questions are asked in a conversational setting and are designed to stimulate thinking and not to test knowledge;

higher order thinking;

depth of learning - bringing children's ideas together in book form ensures that the group is focused on continuity and progression over longer blocks of time;

collaborative learning - floor books are designed to be large in size to allow children to gather around them and engage in learning dialogue around the content of the pages;

a variety of methods for representing thought - adults writing down questions and conversations, children's drawings, photos, adult observations;

brings together child-centred ideas that are put forward by early years staff - the floor book is an integral part of the planning; and

books are available to children at all times. The role of the educator

Educators should listen, document and guide conversation (where appropriate), mediate when children exchange their opinions and perspectives, and plan educational experiences to nurture and inspire each child's needs and interests, based on their learning.
